KAIN 2 - Construction of a residential nursing and care home - Zero energy building for the Tournai Social Services Centre
Two major challenges guided the design of this project for a new residential nursing and care home providing accommodation for 130 residents:
- Firstly: To design a building meeting zero energy standards, which was a first in 2009.
- Secondly: To create a pleasant environment, without any corridors in the accommodation units.
The compactness of the building and the modular simplicity of the structure make it an exemplary project in terms of sustainable development. The building skin is composed out of wooden sections insulated with cellulose. Mobile sun screens are installed on the façades most exposed to the risks of overheating. Rainwater is recovered for domestic use in a burried water storage tank. The building structure involving columns and beams allows the building to easily be adapted to any future changes in requirements.
The architecture and choice of materials are simple and unostentatious with sloped roofs in zinc, façades with a stone base and a combination of wooden cladding and mineral coating.
News from the site: the concrete structure of the KAIN 2 site has been completed, the zero energy building skin is under construction: the uninsulated wooden structure is almost complete; and the installation of the roof trusses in laminated timber is progressing rapidly. The outline of KAIN 2 is finally taking shape.
